7 DaysMachame Route Kilimanjaro
Popular for varied scenery and a climb-high, sleep-low profile; seven days is usually the stronger version.
View itineraryAdds a Karanga night and a more measured acclimatization schedule before summit night.
7 Days Machame Route follows Machame , Shira , Barranco , Karanga , Barafu , Mweka with a camping setup. The itinerary below is written as an operational climbing plan, not just a list of camps: each day explains the altitude strategy, the reason for the pace and what happens before summit night. Mountain weather and individual acclimatization can still require guide-led changes, and safety always takes priority over reaching a scheduled camp or summit.
Register at Machame Gate and start through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest. The first day is about settling into a sustainable walking rhythm while the guides observe hydration, appetite and how everyone responds to the first altitude gain.
Leave the forest for open heather and volcanic ridges, climbing onto the Shira Plateau. The views widen dramatically in clear weather. Arrive with enough daylight to rest and complete an evening oxygen-saturation and symptom check.
Walk high toward Lava Tower, around 4,600 m, before descending to Barranco. This deliberate climb-high, sleep-low day is one of the route’s key acclimatization features. Your guide will keep lunch and rest stops flexible according to the group.
Climb the Barranco Wall early, using hands for balance in a few places but without technical climbing. The trail then rolls across ridges and valleys to Karanga. Finishing earlier than on the six-day version gives more recovery before summit camp.
A shorter but increasingly high-altitude walk brings you to Barafu. After lunch, organize summit clothing, water and headlamp, then rest. The guides give a detailed summit briefing before an early dinner and sleep.
Wake before midnight and begin the long summit ascent. Reach Stella Point at the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak if your condition is good. Descend carefully to Barafu, rest briefly and continue to Mweka Camp at a much lower altitude.
The final descent returns to warm rainforest. At Mweka Gate, sign out of the park and celebrate with the crew before your transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
