6 Days6 Days Machame Route
A faster Machame itinerary suited to fit trekkers who already understand the acclimatization trade-off.
View itineraryA quieter northern approach that can suit drier-season planning and descends via Marangu.
Rongai Route Kilimanjaro follows Rongai , Second Cave , Mawenzi Tarn , Kibo with a camping setup. The itinerary below is written as an operational climbing plan, not just a list of camps: each day explains the altitude strategy, the reason for the pace and what happens before summit night. Mountain weather and individual acclimatization can still require guide-led changes, and safety always takes priority over reaching a scheduled camp or summit.
Begin on Kilimanjaro’s quieter northern side after registration at Rongai Gate. Walk gently through forest and open country to Simba Camp.
A gradual ascent through moorland reaches Second Cave. The shorter day reduces fatigue and gives the body more time to adjust.
Continue toward Kikelewa with expansive views and fewer trail intersections than the busy southern routes.
Climb more steeply to Mawenzi Tarn, then rest or take a short acclimatization walk as conditions allow.
Cross the saddle to Kibo Hut. Prepare summit equipment, hydrate and rest before the midnight start.
Climb overnight to Gilman’s Point and, if everyone is safe to continue, around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Horombo.
Complete the descent to Marangu Gate and transfer back to town.
